Service: Full Service Design
About the Project: This busy family has 4 children and we’ve been working together on their home since 2021! They wanted a space that all the family could enjoy with friends and family. The basement had a tough layout since the room is long and narrow. Moreover, the room had gray beige walls and unappealing cream carpet and not much else going on. We were excited to collaborate with our team on this project and love how bright, functional, and inviting it turned out!
The first step for our Full Service Design process is a “Deep Dive” meeting, where we present a few inspirational ideas to our clients based on the online questionnaire they filled out and/or inspiration photos and dive a little deeper into what we envision for the space. In this case, the clients found a lot of inspiration through Houzz, so we used those photos as a jumping off point. Following the meeting, we took detailed measurements of the space.
Once we knew the direction, we started the design development. The space plan was key in this space, since the room is long and narrow and has many openings, so we decided to create kids’ zones: one for watching TV and lounging, one for reading, and one for arts & crafts!
Then we started to develop the design. The family loves modern design, color and mid-century touches. We were inspired by large art pieces from one of our favorite art vendors and designed the whole color scheme around the art! We wanted to use colorful lighting from Dutton Brown as well, because this was the perfect space to do it. And finally, we customized the rug designs using Flor rug tiles! We started with two color schemes and the clients loved the bold colors, so we went with it for the final design!
3D Drawings and Elevations
The space needed better function, storage and clear “zones”, so we designed custom two built-ins, one for the TV area and one for the kids’ arts and crafts area. These were designed to be unique and different with accent walls as pops of color. We also had to think through functionality such as storage needs, as well as disguising an existing wall bump out.
Designer Nicki designed a TV wall that had storage for the play station, games, and toys, and the desk area has space for legos, art supplies, and more!
Fun lighting, a gallery wall and fun custom-designed rugs, and colorful cushions finished the look of the space.
After the design was approved, we started working on furniture orders as well as working with our contractors to do the painting and woodwork throughout the space. We always send out a “request for quote” to our contractors with dimensioned plans so they can quote the work and see all the details.
We also worked with a flooring company to change the carpet to affordable LVT flooring.
Once all the flooring, painting, and woodworking were done, we added all the lighting, handles, furniture, art, and accessories.
