This busy family has 4 children and they wanted a space where the kids could hang out and where the whole family could enjoy with friends and family. The basement had a tough layout since the room was long and narrow. Moreover, the room had gray beige walls and an unappealing cream carpet, and not much else going on. We were excited to collaborate with our team on this project and love how bright, functional, and inviting it turned out!

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The space plan was key in this space, since the room is long and narrow and has many openings, so we decided to create kids’ zones: one for watching TV and lounging, one for reading, and one for arts & crafts!

The family loves modern design, color and mid-century modern touches. We were inspired by large art pieces from one of our favorite art vendors and designed the whole color scheme around the art! We wanted to use colorful lighting from Dutton Brown as well, because this was the perfect space to do it. And finally, we customized the rug designs using Flor rug tiles! We started with two color schemes and the clients loved the bold colors, so we went with it for the final design!

This project gave us an opportunity to go bold and bright with lots of creativity and great solutions for the family to enjoy.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE PROJECT?

My favorite design elements are the fun accent walls behind the custom built-in areas, the fun rugs, the lighting and the gallery wall!

Functionally, I love the separate zones we created in the space to leverage this large basement space, from a reading area to arts and crafts desk to TV lounging area!
