Style Series: What is Bohemian (Boho) Décor?

via @selamatdesigns

Hi friends! Do you ever find yourself looking at a photo and trying to figure out what decor style it is or what your favorite decor style is? There’s a lot of mixing and matching of styles happening nowadays so it can be confusing, but also there’s a lot more freedom in design styles so you can have fun with it.

Let’s talk about the Bohemian (Boho) look today. I find myself drawn more to this look lately especially as I see different versions of it everywhere (hello World Market!) and there’s a lot of different mashups happening with Boho right now. You might have heard lately people talking about BohoChic, ModernBoho, BohoLuxe decor, etc.  But what actually defines the Bohemian style?

Here is the scoop on Bohemian décor, how you can get the look and below I’ve offered some great options for furniture and accessories to shop for your home to “get the look”.

First, here is a great article on the history of Bohemian décor as well as the origin of the word.  It’s pretty fascinating.

Traditionally, Bohemian was more of a layered, colorful look with lots of knick knacks and items from around the world travels.

In recent years, it seems that Bohemian and all the mashups of the style (ModernBoho, BohoLuxe, etc) have a much wider range in what’s considered Boho, but generally it’s a layered look, with textures and influences from other cultures.  Color can be a key component which can include warm tones, metallics and jewel tones but lately I’ve been seeing a lot of black, white and wood look bohemian photos.

The idea of this look is to capture a more relaxed, freespirited and cozy lifestyle.  It can also be a combination of eclectic assortments but in general the style is open to interpretation.  If you are looking for a style that you can truly make your own, Boho is a great one for you.

Mixing patterns and textures, especially textiles and patterns from around the world, to give the space a fun layered look and the feeling of a well-traveled space.   Accessories can be natural materials combined with elements like rich fabrics, and interesting pieces like macramé.
